Electric City Reflections

The upper half suggests towers and lit windows through blocks of thickly applied colour - a spire here, a lit rectangle there, the rest left as pure colour. Cold blues dominate the left side, warm oranges and yellows mass at the centre around a bright gold core, and purples and magentas press in from the right.

Below the waterline, the same colours dissolve into long vertical streaks, pulled downward the way light behaves on moving water. Everything solid above turns liquid below.

Fine scratched lines run across the whole surface - some black, some orange, some curving - cutting through the colour blocks and keeping the eye moving. They're what stops the composition settling into neat rectangles.

Heavy palette-knife texture throughout, with visible ridges, scraped edges and places where one colour has been dragged over another without fully covering it. Under angled light, the surface picks up shadow and shifts.

A high-impact piece that carries a room on its own - best given space, and a wall where it isn't competing with anything else.

What you get instead is the light. Blues on the left, cold and deep. Oranges and yellows massed in the centre where something is burning bright. Purples and magentas pushing in from the right. The bottom half is the reflection, and it's where the painting loosens up. The colours run downward in vertical streaks, the way light behaves on moving water. Everything solid above turns liquid below.

Look closely, and you'll find thin scratched lines cutting across the surface, some black, some orange. They break up the blocks and keep the eye moving, and they're the reason the piece doesn't settle into neat rectangles.

The paint is worked heavily throughout. Ridges, scraped edges, places where one colour has been dragged over another and not quite covered it. Under a lamp, that texture picks up shadow and the whole surface shifts.

It's a loud painting. It doesn't pretend otherwise.
