Golden Axis – Geometric Harmony

A layered geometric composition in teal, cream, charcoal and gold, built from overlapping circles, arcs and rectangles - each rendered in a distinct material texture.

The surfaces do most of the work here. Veined marble, speckled terrazzo, matte stone and hammered gold leaf sit against one another across the arrangement, so that shapes of similar size read completely differently depending on what they're made of. A deep teal disc carries fine hairline veining. A cream circle is flecked through with dark speckle. The large gold disc at the top is worked in a beaten, uneven finish that catches light across its whole surface.

Running the full height of the piece is a slender vertical gold line. It divides the composition into a pale, warm-toned left half and a darker charcoal right half, and everything else is arranged around it.

The shapes overlap and layer rather than sitting side by side, with soft shadows falling between them to suggest real depth. Full circles, half-arcs and clean rectangular slabs are stacked in a loose vertical column, weighted slightly to the centre.

A strongly vertical piece, built for height rather than width - a tall narrow wall, a stairwell, or the space beside a doorway. The composition is bold enough to hold a minimal room and structured enough not to compete in a busy one.

There's a thin gold line running top to bottom through the middle of this piece, and everything else is arranged around it.

You notice it late. The eye goes first to the big shapes - the gold disc, the teal circle with its hairline crack, the white marble arc on the right. Then you register the line, and the composition rearranges itself. Left side warm and pale, right side dark. Two halves, one seam.

The materials are doing most of the work. Veined marble, speckled terrazzo, matte teal, hammered gold leaf, a slab of charcoal stone. Nothing is flat. Everything catches light differently, which is why the piece keeps changing between morning and evening.

The gold is the interesting choice. It isn't decorative here - it's structural. A thin strip holding a lot of weight, doing the job of a spine.

Geometry like this usually reads as cold. This doesn't, because the surfaces are all things that came out of the ground.

Store flat between acid-free sheets.
