Description
A single statement print in contemporary line-art botanical style, built from two very different techniques laid over each other.
The figures are pure continuous line work - clean, uninterrupted, no fills. Behind and through them sit soft watercolour shapes and translucent leaves, layered so that each one lets the one beneath show through. You can read three leaves stacked in the same space. That transparency is what makes the composition feel like it's dissolving rather than sitting still.
The palette is deliberately narrow: burnt terracotta, olive and sage, warm taupe, charcoal, and a great deal of undyed cream. The terracotta bloom at the top is the only place the colour is allowed to go loud, which is what pulls your eye upward the moment you walk in.
Fine detail rewards a second look - the veining traced through every translucent leaf, the black stamen scattered at the flower's centre, the single lash line on each closed eye.
Printed on premium archival stock with pigment inks. Line work this fine needs paper that holds a clean edge, and pale grounds show every flaw in cheap printing. It belongs in a bedroom, dressing area, study, reading corner, or a salon or wellness space - rooms that are already personal. It also works beautifully on a narrow wall between two doors or at the top of a stairwell, where a vertical composition solves a problem most art can't. A print for the women in your life who don't ask for much - birthdays, a friend moving into her own place, a daughter's first apartment, a mother's room. One frame, one quiet face, and a wall that finally has something on it worth standing still in front of.
Story behind the artwork
Two faces. Both with their eyes closed. Neither of them is looking at you.
That's the first thing to notice, and it's the whole piece.
There are two women here, one behind the other, drawn in a single unbroken contour line - no shading, no features beyond a brow, a lash, a mouth. Between and around them, a plant grows: leaves, stems, a bloom opening above the head of the woman in front. You cannot tell where she ends, and it begins. The line that makes her jaw becomes a stem. A leaf sits where her shoulder should be. She isn't holding the flower. She is the soil it came out of.
The two figures are the quieter idea. Same profile, one slightly ahead of the other - read it as a mother and daughter, as a woman and the version of herself she used to be, or as two friends who have grown into each other's shape. All three readings are correct, and the artwork refuses to settle it for you.
And the closed eyes matter. This isn't a portrait made to be looked at. It's a portrait of someone not performing - thinking, remembering, waiting, at rest. In a world of art that demands eye contact, this one lets you watch someone be entirely unbothered by being watched.
The flower above her is the only thing fully opened.
