Diwali Wall Decoration Ideas: Every Wall, Not Just the Door

Most Diwali wall decoration ideas stop at the door. A toran across the frame, a rangoli on the floor, diyas along the windowsill, fairy lights on the balcony railing. Then you walk inside, and the walls look the way they did earlier.

This post is about those walls. The entrance wall, the mandir wall, the sofa wall, and the dining wall, in that order, with one rule for all of them: whatever you put up should still look right in the future, even after the festive season. Lights come down. A good print doesn't have to.

Diwali wall decoration ideas for the entrance wall

The entrance is the one wall everybody decorates, and the toran is usually where it ends.

Ganesha beside the door is the oldest habit in Indian homes, and a framed print does what an idol does without needing a shelf. Shanti Ganpati – Blessings of Grace is the quiet one, soft gold and stillness. Ganapati's Journey to Kailash has more going on: Ganesha on his mouse crossing the mountains, and it suits a wider wall. Hang either one at eye level next to the door, with the toran above it.

Gaja Lakshmi is the other image that has always belonged above doorways. You'll find her carved over temple entrances all over India, with two elephants pouring water over the goddess. Gaja Lakshmi in Lotus Bloom is the piece for an entrance wall that opens onto the living room, so she's the first thing guests see on Diwali night.

Keep it simple. One A4 print in a slim frame, with some empty wall on either side, looks chosen. Three small things crowded around the nameplate look like clutter.

Mandir wall decoration for Diwali

The mandir wall is where Diwali actually happens, and it's often the one wall with nothing on it but the shelf.

Lakshmi puja on Diwali evening is for Lakshmi and Ganesha, and in many homes Saraswati too. If your mandir has idols, a framed print behind or above them completes the set without getting in the way. Padma Lakshmi – Lotus of Abundance, the goddess on her lotus, is the Lakshmi painting for Diwali. If you're hanging one thing, hang this. Vastu tradition puts the puja space in the north-east, with the images facing east or west. If your mandir is already somewhere else, leave it there. Hang the print where the puja happens and let it face the room. Our post on Vastu paintings for home goes through the rest of the house.

One practical thing: diyas and paper prints don't share a shelf. Keep the flames on the surface below, at least 30 cm from the frame. Soot goes up and lands on the nearest pale thing.

In Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha, the same night is Kali Puja, and a lot of homes keep the goddess on the wall from Navratri right through Diwali. Divine Durga Darbar does that. Nothing has to come down and go back up.

Diwali living room decoration: the sofa wall

Guests spend Diwali evening on your sofa, looking at the wall opposite. That wall gets two hours of attention and usually none of the decorating.

For Diwali, go with colour. Rang Utsav by the Lotus Lake, women celebrating beside a lotus lake in reds, pinks and yellows, was painted about a festival and looks like one. Above a three-seater, with a marigold garland draped over the top of the frame, it does more than a wall of lights.

If the room is neutral and a full folk scene feels like too much, a bright triptych gets you there another way. Happy Shapes – Dopamine Abstract Triptych is three panels of colour and not much else. The dining wall

Diwali dinners go on for a while, and the dining wall is at eye level for everyone at the table.

Abundance is what the festival is about, and the most direct picture of it in Indian art is Krishna with the butter he stole. Makhan Chor works in a dining room where a formal deity image might feel out of place, and children know who he is before they can read.

For something lighter, a botanical: Lotus in Bloom – Botanical Study on a narrow wall, or Tropical Garden Blooms – Floral Triptych Set if there's room for three. Brass and copper on the table against flowers on the wall has always worked.

Diwali wall decoration with flowers and lights

Two seasonal layers go on top of the art and come off on the twelfth.

Flowers: a marigold garland along the top edge of the frame, not across the picture. On a triptych, one garland running across all three panels ties them together. Change it every two or three days, because dried marigold drops petals onto the frame.

Lights: one string of warm-white fairy lights along the top and down one side of the frame, or along the top of a triptych. Leave the artwork itself lit only by the room. Cool-white LEDs turn ochres and reds grey. Warm-white keeps them warm.

Simple Diwali wall decoration without drilling

A lot of Diwali happens in rented flats, where a nail in the wall costs you part of the deposit.

Paper prints are light, and light things don't need nails. A framed A4 hangs on one adhesive picture hook rated for its weight. Press it onto a clean wall, wait an hour, then hang the frame. A framed A3 takes two hooks. They peel off cleanly after the festival, or after the lease.

Or don't hang anything. A picture ledge, or the top of a console, holds a row of frames leaning against the wall, with the diyas on the surface in front. Three A4 prints leaning on a ledge above the console is the entrance wall done in ten minutes and undone in five.

What stays up after Diwali

This is the case for decorating walls with art instead of more lights. Lights come down. A print doesn't have to.

Ganesha and Lakshmi belong at the entrance and the mandir in every month of the year. A folk festival scene or a floral triptych is a living room piece that happens to look its best on Diwali night. The garland and the lights are the seasonal layer. Take them off and the wall is still finished.

When to order

Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026, and Diwali on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Since framing can take longer than delivery, ordering in the first half of October gives you enough time to receive the prints and have them framed before the festival.
